Thoughtful Thursdays – Working with customers who make you want to tear your hair out
We all encounter this customer sooner or later. These are the ones who make you want to tear your hair out.
There are many ways to test your patience and todays thought is about working with this customer. No matter the reason, the result is that you end up spending an inordinate amount of time serving the customer and it is very frustrating.
An effective way to work with this customer is to reinforce the ground rules with them. The goal is to have them be mindful and respectful of your time.
Sometimes it is the sales persons willingness to be helpful combined with the fear of losing the sale that sets up a favourable environment for the customer to have unreasonable expectations.
Listen, empathize and be mindful of your customers concerns. Your response will set the tone for future conversations. Be understanding yet firm and stick to the plan. Get agreement with that plan of action and be accountable to it. Meet the expectations that have been agree to. Hold your customer accountable as well and build mutual respect.
There will be some that never seem to be happy, yet they continue to buy. In the end they are happy or they would take their business somewhere else.
Good selling,
Richard
