Thoughtful Thursdays – Tips for the new outside sales people
A variation of this post appeared several years ago.
If you are new to outside sales, congratulations and welcome! Outside sales may not be for everyone, but if you take to it, there are few better careers. Whether you were waiting for the opportunity or you accepted the offer reluctantly, the experience you have the opportunity to gain is incredibly valuable and will stay with you. You will learn and improve transferable skills that are not even on your radar today.
If you take a few moments to think about it, outside sales offers a lot.
- You are paid not to be in the office
- You may have a company vehicle or be receiving a car allowance
- Travel expenses are reimbursed
- You have the opportunity to meet an engage with new people on a daily basis
- You are paid to help
- Much of your time is on your schedule
There is no better time to put good practices in place that will serve you well throughout your sales career.
- Seek out mentorship from seasoned sales veterans
- Introduce yourself to each member of your support team and get to know them
- Learn to give your undivided attention to people
- Listen more than you talk
- Always be on time
- Make structure work for you, not against you
- Enjoy the sales experience, there are few better
- Dress and look the part every day
Every job has its ups and downs, sales is no exception. From the first day, take ownership of your territory and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.
Good selling,
Richard
